We have Accelerated-X in our CS lab working with Matrox Millenium II
cards and it is a noticeable speed increase.

So I think it is worth the money.

I think it is easy to install, however you still need the X libraries.

I guess it is available for Solaris and FreeBSD too as far as I can
remember.

We haven't had too mnay problems, at some point I had an incompatibility
with an older version of jdk on my box with a number Nine Imagine 128.

As far as I know you have to go for an XFree server here.
