setting up the apcupsd

I am having a problem with the set up of my smartups.  For some reason i
can't get it to work. I install the RPM and then configured the
apcupsd.conf file but i doesn't work.  I had it working about a week ago
but has to reinstall RedHat5.2.  For some reason I can't figure out what
I did the first time.  I went through the man pages and docs for apcupsd
but still couldn't get it to work.  The up is on my second seriel port.
If any has a smartups set up and running any help would be greatly
appreciated.
