virtual desktop???

Does anyone know how to get rid of the virtual desktop?????  I have the
problem with it switching to other areas of the desktop when I am
working on some thing.  I don't use the virtual desktop and find it
kinda useless to have it if I am not going to use it plus this will stop
it from switching on me.
