For my $0.02,
In RH5.2 (and probably in 5.1 , but I have 5.0 and 5.2 so???),
running 'linuxconf' you can set -SuperUser Equivalence- to a
user.
Start linuxconf
click on: config|users accounts
click on: User Name in box
click on: privilages
enable SuperUser Equivalence to Granted or Granted/Silent
Press Accept/OK, till thru and back to the menu tree.
Milage may vary, but it did give me SuperUser status with out entering
su
