It is/was good advertising for RedHat. Back in the old days, when they
were unknown, it was a good move. Nowadays it has little or no use.
And I agree....posting a message to Usenet is the best way to attract
loads of SPAM. The good side is that there are so many usenet sites,
and so many posts, that its hard for spammers to keep up any more.
Imagine all the sites that the spambot has to visit. It must keep a
T1 line busy indeed as it has to download the full news feed. It used
to be that a 56K line would handle a usenet feed...no more.
And, think about this one: A spammer advertises on USENET, and he
in turn gets Spammed. Hehehehe. ... poetic justice, except for one
minor point: its YOU and I that pay for Spam traffic.
A typical spammer pays $19.95 per month just like you do. He sends
100,000 or more spams a day. You and I pay the same amount, but even
if we are prolific we only produce a dozen or two messages a day.\
So we all bear a proportionally larger share of the Internet backbone
expense.
