GNOME is really just the desktop manager stuff without the window manager, so
you can use pretty much anything. I used GNOME + AfterStep for a while, and
also, GNOME + icewm. There are several wms now that are said to be
GNOME-compliant, and E should be soon, if it isn't now. But anyway, to avoid
some of the weird conflicts between the wm and GNOME, GNOME compliance seems
like a good criterion.
