Cannot login remotely via telnet

Running Redhat Linux (2.0.34). Configured IP Masquerading in order to use
the Linux server as my gateway to the internet.
My one client workstation, an NT box, is living life vicariously through the
Linux box, and life couldn't be better.

Added a new user on the Linux server. Attempted to Telnet to it from the NT
client workstation.
The connection was established. Got the 'Login' and 'Password"prompt. Typed
in my UserID and password.
In instant later, the system returned the error: "Login incorrect".

Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated. (And trust me, the
password is correct) Thanks Jon.
