If it was in hosts.deny he would not even get the login: prompt.
What I would do is to try to telnet in from a different box, preferably
a
Linux box. If the login then succeeds, its an NT thing. God bless NT.
If
it fails, then we need to look at the Linux server and/or ipfwadm.
I'd like to see a login confirmed right at the affected box. In other
words, right at the console. The original poster stated that the
password
is correct, but he did not state that he could log in to the console.
Maybe
he just meant that he hunt-and-pecked typed it with Aunt Spelling
watching
over his shoulder.
Also, the original poster did not state:
(1) Is this a ROOT login? Not only username root, but a user with uid=0
and
gid=0 ? IN that case, its not going to work and the behaviour would be
exactly as described.
(2) Do logins from different users work, and just this one fails, or are
we talking here about a general failure of users to be able to telnet
in?
(3) Can the affected user log in at the console?
Until those questions are answered, we are all just speculating.
