KDE displaying images in black and white??

Hello, I recently installed KDE 1.0 from RPM on a Redhat 5.2 machine and when I
have XFree86 set to 32 bpp KDE will display JPG backgrounds as black and white. 
This doesn't happen in 24 or 16 bpp but Netscape looks funny in 24 bpp and
some of my nicer backgrounds look considerably less nice in 16bpp, so I would
like to get the 32bpp working properly.  While in 32bpp mode under KDE, I can
run Netscape or xv and they work just fine in color. 
The problem occurs only when the image is displayed as a background as far as I
can tell.  I previously used Window Maker and didn't experience this problem.  I
use a Diamond Fire GL 1000 Pro video card with a 3dlabs permedia2 chipset, and
am using XFree86 3.3.3 with the XF86_3DLabs server. (and yes, I applied the
clock bug patch).  If you need any more information or testing from me please
