X on a gateway vx700 diamondtron

I have spent the past few days trying to get X up and running on a Gateway
VX700 Diamondtron monitor with an STB Velocity 128 video card, but have been
unsuccessful. The nearest match
for a monitor in the Xconfigurator monitor list is a Gateway CrystalScan ...

Even choosing a generic VGA monitor does not work! All configurations lead
to a total system
crash (blank screen and system hangs).

Has anyone out there configured X to work with these components, and if so,
could you tell me what the secret is?
