The problem could be in your mouse.  If the mouse is set wrong,
the system crashes/hangs with the black screen etc.

If you are using a Microsoft Serial mouse (plain, not with the
wheel), try both the /dev/ttyS0 and /dev/cua0  for the mouse
port.  ONe of them will lock it up, the other won't.  This is 
not to say your mouse is the problem, but it may be and you
might be barking up a wrong tree.  In particular, PS/2 mice,
bus mice, Logitech...etc....anything ohter than the basic
serial mouse can cause you trouble.

Also try both the plain VGA server, not just the VGA monitor.
YOu might need to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config manually to force
this if Xconfigurator insists on installing some other VGA
server (driver).
