LILO requires FAT partitions in strategic places ?

Has anyone noticed if their system likes what mine likes:-
- for the last extended partition on the hard drive to be FAT
- for the primary partition to be FAT
- for the Linux partitions to be created in their actual order on the disk
(i.e. first extended partition created first, second created second, etc.)
Otherwise, LILO doesn't work for me.
