When you do the following, it should upgrade all the rpms
that were installed by an earlier RedHat distribution,
so all those programs will run with the current glibc.

Depending on what changes you made in package conf files,
the upgrade process may be able to translate them to work
with the new versions.  In any case, it leaves files for you
which are named *rpmsave, which you can compare with the
working version of the file and make corrections where necessary.

Any programs you compiled should still work if they are compatible
with the current version of libc5. libc5 will be upgraded too, if
it was originally installed from an rpm.  In practice you might need
to recompile some of the programs you compiled before the upgrade.
