Recent kernels are pretty SMP safe- especially 2.1.x. I notice that
you're also interested in a VA box. I know that VA does quite a bit of
kernel tweaking to make the kernel run better on their hardware (patches
available on their site as well). Word has it that one of the VA 4 way
Xeon boxes compiled a kernel in 45seconds. I want one of those! :-)
If you stay with the VA provided kernels, I would expect to see excellent
performance/stability with SMP.
