I have a slightly different situation but I've found that creating a
boot directory soon after partitioning and making the filesystem
usually helps. The kernel (vmlinuz not LILO) needs to be within the
first 1023 cylinders of early bios computers. In fact, if you going
to recompile the kernel for missing drivers and configuration changes
it would be good to uncomment the Makefile entry of INSTALL_PATH=/boot
in the /usr/src/linux directory so the kernel, System.Map and boot
executables and be found by LILO there.
