Searching newsgroups, I found:
-Try the keyword "linear" in /etc/lilo.conf
-If you have a LINUX partition on your first harddisk, it is a good idea
(no, a GREAT idea) to install lilo on the linux partition and then
change the "active" partition to the partition with lilo on it.

This was about 10 minutes' work.  It's unfortunate that nobody more
knowledgeable about LILO answered your question in the course of two
days, but you could have found out some tips with a quick net search.
