Ethernet Cards for Linux

I am trying to find a ethernet card and was wondering if you could tell
me the difference between Tier 1 and Tier 2 ethernet cards? I don't have
any idea or if I do I haven't heard it put
in that term before. The Redhat site lists the compatible cards in these
two groups and I don't know what they are. Anyone else have an idea?
