.xinitrc .Xclients & Wm fun..

Hi,

I'm fairly new to this movement, so I'll try and state my troubles and hang
back for some assistance..

I'm running redhat5.2 on a machine here which i'm accessing via an x-windows
server that runs locally on my NT box (don't ask..)

I'm trying to get gnome to startup with the window manager of my choice.
Everything I've read indicated that I should place something along the lines
of:

gnome-session &
gnome-terminal &
exec fvwm2

And in theory, after making it executable, this should load the gnome panel,
a gnome terminal & the fvwm2 window manager happening. This isnt't happening
- in fact as some of you may know, it's just loading fvwm2 and doing nothing
else. I also found some doco which pointed me to another file called
.Xclients which I duplicated the above information in and made executable.
This loads gnome, a gnome terminal and what I think is the old fvwm (is
there a way to determinate what wm is currently running??) and heaps of
xterms..

I tried changing the exec fvwm2 to read 'enlightenment' no quotes, and
enlightenment loaded and crashed the system.. so I took that away and tried
my old config - same thing except each time I load, enlightenment pops up
and asks me if I want to modify my files so it can load all the time (while
the old fvwm is running)

Can I stop enlightenment doing this?
Can I actually make what I want to work?
Whats the diff between .xclients and .xinitrc?

Thanks

Adrian
