The 's' basically means that the program executes as the owner of the file.
traceroute is owned by root, and when executed by anyone it runs as root -
this can be used as a huge exploit though so be careful.

Great! That worked like a charm.
BTW, for the record, do you know what the a+xs option does exactly?
