An upgrade does what it says.  It upgrades your system and most of the
changes you've made will be preserved in .rpmsave files.   Do a fresh
install if you want to be as if you formated the drive.

Ahhum.  Yeah, some gnome apps core dumps but there's no serious ill effects.
I would install GNOME over KDE for the simple fact that gmc (gnome's file
manager) works better for me than kfm (KDE's file manager).

I've had kfm blow away entire directories with telling me - I don't trust it
any more.  Perhaps by KDE 2.0, I'll go back to using KDE.
