The rj-45 cable (standard) uses 4 of the 8 conductors.. there are 2 pairs
reserved for network use.
consider the following...
Normal:
A A
B B
X X
Y Y
"crossover":
A B
B A
X Y
Y X
basically.. it's full duplex.. and you don't need a switching device or
anything. It's used to link 2 and only 2 machines together. :)
