Problems with Printing

Hello:

I managed to download and successfully (subject to interpretation) install
Red Hat 6.0. I have an HP LaserJet 5P, which has worked beautifully for me
since Red Hat version 4.0. In the install, I simply selected HP LaserJet 4,
5, 6 series and it worked from there. In the past, it has always chose
/dev/lp1 to map to lpt1, which I've heard is incorrect, and that it really
should be /dev/lp0. I didn't worry too much about it though, because
printing has worked just fine.

With the install of 6.0, I noticed that it changed. It was now picking
/dev/lp0 and I thought, 'Great, it's been fixed in this release." When I
first tried to print out a document using lpr like:

   lpr test.txt

I got nothing on the printer at all. I saw an email posted here yesterday
that said that Red Hat forgot to set the +s bit on the /var/spool/lpd
directory and the /var/spool/lpd/lp directory. So I went in and and did a
chmod +s on both of those directories. Now when I execute the lpr command,
the printer lights up like it received all of the information, but just sits
there until I hit the form feed button one time. This then ejects the page
I'm trying to print. Not understanding what was happening, I went back and
removed the bit from those two directories, and it continues to do this. I
power cycled the printer, and still the same behavior.

Anyone know what might be happening here and can possibly explain in
laymen's terms so I can try and correct this? Thanks for any light that can
be shed on this.

- Mike
