The program, du, will show the disk usage, directory by
directory. man du will explain the options. It is best
to redirect the output to a file (on a floppy, perhaps) and
examine it at your leisure. You can then see what the heck
is gobbling up your drive space.
Usually its things like uncompressed log files, caches (mail
spools for undelivered mail containing images etc), or tmp
files. With du you can see and analyze all.
