I had problems posting to the redhat-ppp-list,
so I am posting here and hoping some of you Redhat ppp gurus hang out here too
:-)
==========================================================
Dear readers,
This is a question which probably you will have
heard thousands of times
before. I hope I am posting this to the right place - all flames please to /dev/null. Any responses by direct e-mail only please to: a d scott tinyonline co uk I am attempting to configure my modem for use
with pppd to establish a
dialup connection with an ISP (hopefully Freeserve). I hope to use software like Netscape and Pine on my Linux partition, while continuing to use Windows 98 clients on my dos partition. The modem sits on COM4 (== cua3 under Linux) on
dos, and works fine with the
connection software provided by Tiny Online. I am running Linux 2.0.36 with the Red Hat
distribution version 5.2,
distributed with PC Plus magazine. I have been attempting to follow the
instructions given on p211 on the May
1999 issue of PC Plus, with which the Linux distribution came, in order to establish a connection to and register with Freeserve. I set the modem configuration from the Red Hat control panel to cua3, and made some alterations to files under /etc, following the instructions. Now I have problems, because I do not know what
at 'AT' command is, and I
have never used Minicom ! I tried typing the Freeserve number in the dialing directory, and selecting 'dial'. Nothing happened. No sound, nothing. It just timed out after 45 seconds. I tried typing in the number manually into Minicom. Same result. I tried altering the cua number. Same result. So I went and found some documentation. Very
impressive, and a lot better
than since I was last administering a Linux box 5 years ago... The problem is, that I simply cannot understand the relevent section of the PPP-Howto document. Could some kind soul please illuminate me on how
to get going with this modem?
Information gleaned from control panel under
Windows 98:
The modem is a V.90 K56Flex HSP PCI Modem, port
COM4, Interrupt 11,
Address D800, UART Unknown chip, Highest speed 115K Baud. Diagnostics:

No conflicts although ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI
IRQ Steering also
has interrupt 11. Thanks very much,
