Cdrom problem?

what do I do if the installation for 5.2/or 6.0 doesn't detect the cdrom
when trying to install.

I put the floppy in and boot from it, I start the installation and when
it askes for the cd it can't mount it?

My father is trying to install on an older computer and is having some
problem like this. I have tried to help, but don't know enough my self
to solve it. Anyone have an idea?
