Erik,

Going with an external modem would be best.  Going with an ISA modem is ok
maybe depending upon the model and type.  Going with a PCI modem is
extremely bad.  Most if not all of these are win-modems (even if they
don't say so.)  As such, they need special software to run and no one
seems to write this software for Linux.

The only way you will need isapnp is if you get an ISA modem.  As for
setup, I believe all you need to do is make a link called /dev/modem to
the proper com port (/dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1), although I'm not
completely sure for an external modem.  I have ISA.  Good luck.
