That's also a feature of Gnus.  8^)

Seriously, I'm surprised so many newsreaders and mailers _don't_ allow
it.  Amiga clients (way back when) would always spawn your own editor,
but few of the graphical ones I know do.  (Most console ones other
than Pine spawn $EDITOR or $VISUAL, though.)
