Problem LPR Printing from Remote Windows boxes

We are having some confusing problems printing from remote windows boxes
to a Linux (Redhat 5.2) server. Printer works fine from the linux box,
printcap is attached below. Problem is that in order for the windows
boxes to print to the server, each user must have his userid as per the
windows machine entered as a separate userid on the Linux system.

We are printing from windows as a straight lpr printer,

\\machinename.xxx.yyy\printername

Man page on printcap says that only if the "rs" flag is set should a user
id be required on the server. Our printcap does not have this flag set,

#
# This printcap is being created with printtool v.3.27
# Any changes made here manually will be lost if printtool
# is run later on.
# The presence of this header means that no printcap
# existed when printtool was run.
#
##PRINTTOOL3## LOCAL POSTSCRIPT 600x600 letter {} PostScript Default {}
lp1|lp|pro|Pro600:\
	:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp1:\
	:mx#0:\
	:lp=/dev/lp1:\
	:if=/var/spool/lpd/lp1/filter:\
	:sh:

We found the same behavior for unix print clients. We had to exactly
duplicate the users remote userid on our Linux box before the linux
server would allow the unix based user to access the printer.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Bob
