You can leave your old passwd and group files behind.  NIS is designed
so that you can choose which parts to serve centrally and which parts
you want to handle locally.

To quit using NIS, I think that all this takes is unsetting the NIS
domain name (domainname '') and commenting out /etc/yp.conf.  Glibc
will figure out "on-the-fly" whether to use it or not.
