NIS creates its own copies of the files it needs, in /var/yp, so you can
easily install it, configure it, use it, and tear it out, all without
reconfiguring any other part of your system or feeling any side effects.

When you tear it out, though, make sure you do so thoroughly.  Improper
removal will cause some headaches.

If you're going to try NIS, do use more than a single machine.  Running
the NIS server and client on the same machine is terribly unimpressive,
and will actually introduce a few headaches.
