I didn't. Another tip got it working another way.

Based on this definition, which I did look up when I ran into trouble, does
say to replace the package, which it did not. So, forcing it isn't as
forceful and one might think.

I didn't see this. I stopped at --force. One would think that a --force
would also tell it to ignore dependencies, which it doesn't.
Instead of --force, maybe it should be --nudge. :-)
