I don't know what kind of funky changes you might have made in five
years that would complicate things (are you implying that you have not
done a fresh install in that long?), but (this might be a little too
simple) have you tried using sudo or suid? Somewhere on one of your red
hat cd's (I found mine in a 5.2 disk) you should find it, and it allows
you to run programs with root access.. I just tried it, and it works for
x programs, too.
