You do not need, but you can do. Otherwise the appropriate user needs
to have write permission for the destination directory.

I got mine in /opt/soffice which is a symlink to /opt/soffice51/

1. Do a "Workstation Installation" by running /opt/soffice/bin/setup 
2. To start StarOffice use /opt/soffice/bin/soffice

"setup /net"
