One internet telephony application for *nix is
SpeakFreely. As the name implies you can speak over
the net for free. It has optional encryption so that
you can have a conversation free of unwanted
listeners. And the app can be downloaded for free from
John Walker's site at:
http://www.fourmilab.ch/speakfree
I have successfully used it under windows but haven't
tried the unix version yet. I want to try it as soon
as I learn how to install the thing.
Don't think my ISP is willing to be a telephone
receptionist for it's hundreds of users though.
