I did not see a responses so I thought I would throw this out: I had much
the same trouble with, I think, an old Intel EtherExpress 16 bit card in a
new Dell server. It drove me crazy because it would be fine, I'd walk away
and 30 minutes later I couldn't contact the box.
What's worked well is replacing the old, Intel ISA card with a new, HP
VG100 PCI card. This changed everything (ISA to PCI, different port on a
different hub, different driver, etc.). Don't know which change fixed the
problem. So my advice would be to replace the NIC with a different model
(and, ideally, try a different cable and hub) and use netconfig (?) to set
up the network again. You might also post this to comp.os.linux.hardware
and c.o.l.networking. Good luck.
