Swap Space

I had a 2 Gig partition sitting on an 8 Gig Hard Drive,

I decided to reduce it to 1.5Gig and use the .5 Gig left over for swap
space..

The partition I chose was the last 2 Gig partition on the drive
/dev/hdc7

I unmounted the file system on the 2 gig partition and then using fdisk
did the following:

d -> delete partition and chose 7 for partition 7 (hdc7)

I then created a partition as hdc7 but this time with only 1.5 Gig,

I also created another partition to use for swap as /dev/hdc8 with the
remaining
0.5 Gig...

I then did a write all changes to partition table and quit fdisk..

I also did a mkfs on /dev/hdc7 , my fstab had a mount point for
/dev/hdc7,

this was unused so I did not feel there would be a difference when
mounting the file systems save a lessened filesystem.

I then did a reboot, shutdown -r 0,

the system then complianed that the superblock says that /dev/hdc7 has 2
Gig! But physically it only has 1.5Gig, and asked me to enter
maintenance mode by typing the root password or Ctrl-D to continue,

I enetered maintenance mode and used fsck, but nothing happens,

My questions are:

1) What did I do wrong? How do I correct the situation?

2) How do I create the additional swap space using the unused /dev/hdc8
with size 0.5 Gig?

Sorry about the length of this message, but I'm trying to give as much
details as I can remember,

I look forward to your suggestions,

thanks,

Ahbaid.
