Adding a printer under 6.0 doesn't work

I plugged my ancient inkjet into my new 6.0 machine and it refused to print
a test page. I tried several combinations because it's not listed and
nothing worked. After a while it would stop recognizing /dev/lp0. I
checked /etc/conf.modules and it had a line for the parallel port. The
printer worked fine as a BJ-200 under RH5.2. If anyone knows what I can do
to make it work, I'd be thrilled.
So, I plugged it back into the old rh5.2 machine and tried to add it as a
remote printer. I created /etc/hosts.lpd with the name of the 6.0 host. I
created the printer on both the 5.2 and 6.0 machines (remote on the 6.0
machine, obviously). Nothing seems to work, I either get something like
"host5.2: lpd: connection refused" or "host5.2: lpd: no such printer lp".
Once I got a message in /var/log/messages like "... lpd[xxxxx] Address
already in use" that I don't understand. All other networking (ping, http,
telnet, ftp) between the two machines works perfectly. The test jobs get
queued on the 6.0 host and never appear on the 5.2 host. Any ideas? Any
way to find out more what's happening?
The couple of books I have consulted seem to indicate that I've done
everything right... but then they aren't very detailed (they give the
impression that this is a snap).
Sorry a few of the details are fuzzy, I'm doing this from memory. I can
send more info to the interested. Thanks!
