You can put an alias char-major-108 off in the /etc/conf.modules

This is for the new kernel release 3. I do not remember but I think this module
will define a /dev/ppp if there is not one defined already in the new kernel.

To know what device corresponds to a particular char major, you have to consult
the /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt file

The other definitions are in /usr/src/linux/include/linux/ppp-comp.h
