Local FTP install

I have a machine at home that I just installed RedHat 6.0 on.
Standard installation - I haven't done anything much beyond install
it. I'm now trying to do an FTP install on another machine from the
first. I mount the CD on the first PC in the /home/ftp/pub/RedHat
directory. When I run the install from the second, it gets to the
point of retrieving the base(?) file, sits for a while, then returns a
message similar to "Bad message from server." (I don't remember
exactly.)
I'm able to ping from the first machine to the second, and the
/var/log/secure file indicates that an FTP connection was made
from the second machine.
My question: What do I have wrong here? :) It seems like the
connection is OK. I just put in a couple jacks for a small home
network. This is the first test. Since the logs show an FTP
session established, I think my wiring job is OK. On my first
machine, I've noticed that if I run netstat while the second machine
is trying to connect, it doesn't display anything until the second
machine gives up the attempt.
Any help would be appreciated. I hope I've explained this semi-
clearly. :)
