This can be done. Tyan's Thunder boards are pretty good, in my experience.

About the only use for an AGP slot in a server is to slam in a $25 video
card that doesn't chew up a PCI slot.

Why? I hope you're not planning to run a serious server on IDE disks.
The words you want to think about are "multiple concurrent I/O requests,"
which is something you do NOT get with IDE disks.
