respawning too fast

Here's a good one.
I have no cable attached to /dev/ttyS1, yet I get the following error:
INIT: Id "S1" respawning too fast: disabled for five minutes
I've only seen that kind of stuff when someone had an autoanswer type program
on the other end of the serial line and would go into a login loop. Well,
with no serial cable connected, where is the loop coming from?
I have minicom up and running on ttyS0, and nothing that I know of attached
to ttyS1.
Any pointers will be appreciated.
