path statement and compiler choice

I Thought I understood this but now I guess I do not.
When I run "env" at a bash prompt, I see that my path
contains redundant/repetitive statements (there are
two /usr/bin entries, for instance). I check /etc/profile
and see that there are none of the redundant entries in
its path statement. I check my personal .bash_profile
AND .bashrc and neither contains any path entries that
could account for the redundancies.
What file do I edit/check to eliminate the redundant
path entries...or edit to change the sequence in the
path statement?
Second question: I have egcs-1.1.2 and pgcc-1.1.3 installed,
both via rpm. Right now, the default compiler used is the
egcs set. I want to switch to the pgcc set as my default.
How do I go about this?
