RH 6.0 Screen Lockup

I installed RH 6.0 on a virgin system (PIII), and got Xconfigurator
successfully set. But after the first startx (into GNOME), when I
break out of X (ctl-alt-bk OR through menu), the terminal and
keyboard lock up. I can access the machine remotely through
rlogin. I can destroy the /etc/X11/X link and SOMETIMES I
can get the termnal back and sometimes not (after a shutdown
and reboot).

I have apllied most of the RH 6.0 errata rpms (not the kernel yet)
and am out of ideas except for a complete reinstall.

The problem occurs with two different video cards (Diamond S3 Virge--works
well on RH 5.2 machines; and ATI Expert 98) and two different keyboards.
