This is a good question. I know that RH does not provide the proper
config files with their kernels that wree used to make them. If you
isntall the SMP kernel upgrade from RH (2.2.5-22) and then try and
complie something using the SMP switch it will bomb. You have to re-run
make config and select your processor type and the SMP option. Then you
can complile SMP. They also default the CPU to i386. I believe the
file is autoconf.h? But I could be way off, its been a while since I
messed with it. This was disappointing that they give you a nice RPM to
install the kernel but don't give the the config files used to create
it.
