I am just in the process of recompiling the kernel in order to
enable NTFS. So the process is too easy:
1. Get the kernel-2.2.5-22.src.rpm
2. Install it. Among the source files you get many
config files, each one for a different architecutre
(like kernel-2.2-i3686-smp.config)
3. Install the linus-2.2.5.tar.bz2 files in a temporary dir
4. Go to the resulting dir (mine was /var/tmp/linux)
5. make menuconfig
6. Load the configuration file from the sources
7. Make the desired changes in the configuration
8. Save the new configuration to the same file you have loaded
9. Copy the modified file back to the SOURCES dir (where rpm
put the sources when you installed the *.src.rpm package).
10. Build the rpm for the desired architecture:
rpm -ba kernel-2.2.5.spec
rpm --target i686 -ba kernel-2.2.5.spec
12. Install the resulting binaries
But I was unable to complete the compilation for the kernel
from the updates. The building proces crashes with messages
indicating memory exaustion. I have tried in several machines
and got the same problem. Then I decided to look for a new
release and I am just finishing the building process for
the kernel from rawhide, which was released yesterday. Its
version is 2.2.12.
