I've had problems with LILO from the install disk myself, but I don't
remember exactly why.
A good solution may be:
Run through the whole setup up to installing lilo. Switch to vt2, and
type 'mount'. Unmount /mnt and anything underneath it. You may also be
able to get to a menu after LILO fails, and choose to go on to the next
step. I don't recall.
Reboot with your CD (or boot floppy) still in the drive. When syslinux
comes up, type :
'rescue 1 root=/dev/<your root partition>'
Linux should come up in single user mode. Try to run 'lilo' from the
command line. If there are errors, you'll probably be more able to
correct them from here than anywhere else.
Reboot and set up X.
