You don't need to be on the Internet to serve pages (of course, no one will
see them but you...).

The Apache web site has quite a bit of information:

You may also benefit from a book on Apache.  One I liked so-so was:

Mohammed, Kabir J.  (1999).  Apache server:  Administrator's handbook:  The
ultimate shop manual.  IDG Books: New York.  ISBN 0764533061.  

It has a fair amount of fairly basic information.  The so-so rating is
mostly because I was looking for information on hosting virtual secure
sites and this book doesn't have much.

You should also not be afraid to get one of those "XXX for dummy's" books
if you feel any need to get brushed up on things like HTTP.  In general, I
find the O'Reilly books (the ones with the animals on the cover) to be
readable and informative.
