making modules work

Hi there

No doubt someone has asked this before, or thought of it at least. Can't
find anything in the archives though:

I built a modularised kenerl and I assumed that somehow that conf.modules
would be automatically updated with what I chose in the Kernel to be a
module. This isn't the case? Do I have to re-run through my kernel and find
out what I made a module and then manually put it in conf.modules?

Seems a little bit of a long winded process..
