The manuals which come with the boxed set describe this in detail as the
"initialization process". The /etc/rc.d directory contains the files (in
subdirectories called rc.<runlevel>). If you don't have the boxed set,
possibly you can download this manual from redhat.
Linux init is way more complicated than DOS.
Put serial commands in /etc/rc.d/rc.serial .
