Your X server is dieing.  Edit /etc/inittab and change the initial
runlevel from 5 to 3, then reboot.  When it gets back up, login from the
console and run 'startx >& xerrors'.  Your X error messages be piped to
the xerrors file and you'll be able to tell what happened.
